On December 7, 2018 we held our annual conference at Aitken Hill Conference Centre in Yuroke, Victoria. With 155 staff and managers attending it was an opportunity to reflect on 2018, catch up with colleagues and celebrate 35 years of Insurance House.
The conference was titled ‘Our Journey, 35 years and Beyond’ and we took this opportunity to invite a variety of guest speakers who represent our past and our future. Wayne Hildebrand (former Insurance House Managing Director), took to the stage for a Q & A session with our MD Jay Fereday. Wayne talked about the history of Insurance House, our journey from a single office in Echuca to the events and decisions that helped grow and shape the business.
Our keynote speaker for the day was Margaret Jackson. A high profile Australian corporate executive, Margaret was the chairman of Qantas from 2000 to 2007 and was the first woman to become chairman of a top 50 publicly listed company in Australia. Additional directorships include ANZ and Billabong not to mention Margaret being the first female director of BHP Billiton in 108 years of history, she is a true powerhouse.
Margaret captivated her audience with her in-depth stories of her time at Qantas including the failed Qantas takeover bid. Shedding light on back room battles and story behind the well-known interview she gave that ultimately led to her resignation.
A further highlight of the conference was a powerful presentation by Dave Burt, founder and CEO of SALT (Sport and Life Training). A non-for-profit health promotion organisation that uses the principles of sport to help transform Australian culture across businesses, schools and clubs. Dave spoke to the power of conversation, connecting with and supporting each other. We are excited to be able to offer our staff the opportunity to work more closely with Dave and the SALT team in 2019.
Not forgetting the day and evening was also a birthday celebration for our staff, we held an ‘Iconic Aussie’ fancy dress combined Birthday and Christmas function. Our staff all getting into the spirit of the night with costumes that included nods to Steve Irvin, Dame Edna Everage, Warwick Capper and Ozzie Ostrich just to name a few. We had a very special guest and legitimate Australian icon, Daryl Braithwaite who took to the stage with his band for a special performance that included the hits One Summer and Horses.
